Social Security

What is Social Security?

The Social Security Retirement benefit is a monthly payment that replaces part of your income when ease into or begin retirement.

FERS and CSRS Offset employees are entitled to Social Security benefits.

Regular CSRS employees may be eligible for benefits if all credits were met. Employees who think they may be eligible should check directly with the Social Security Administration.

Social Security Reductions

Windfall Elimination and Government Pension Offset

The Windfall Elimination Program affects Social Security benefits of Federal employees who are receiving a federal pension where all or part of the earnings were not covered by Social Security. Employees who were hired and paying into retirement after December 31, 1983, or have 30 or more years of substantial earnings under Social Security are exempt from the Windfall Elimination.

The Government Pension Offset affects Social Security spouse, divorced spouse and survivor benefits payable to individuals who have an earned annuity based on work where Social Security taxes were not required. This reduction equals 2/3 of the retiring individual’s civil service annuity. GPO does not affect your own earned Social Security benefit.
